Looking closely.

I grew up in Lamorna, near Penzance, surrounded by clay and my father’s pottery. Making small things was part of my childhood; later, learning to throw at the Leach Pottery’s Kick Club gave me another way to work with the material.

My interest in decay began with looking closely at fruit: the shifting surfaces, broken edges and tiny insects. That curiosity led from painting into slip-cast porcelain apples and other ceramic forms. Still life and vanitas paintings continue to be a point of reference.

Alongside the fruit sculptures, I make mugs and vessels that draw on flowers, fungi and the Cornish landscape. I’m interested in the space between something growing, something ripening and something beginning to change.
